Developing Intersectional Communication Design Histories
This project led by Dr Nicola St John and Dr Fanny Suhendra explores the development of a curriculum framework for intersectional and decolonial design history, based on a student-centred pedagogy and the coming together of many streams of design knowledges. Situated within a first year Communication Design History unit, our approach seeks to respond to Indigenous sovereignty and inherent gender, racial and cultural biases within dominant design discourses. Our overarching aim is to encourage students to design from within their cultures rather than isolated from them, which is particularly powerful for students who may see themselves as underrepresented within colonial scripts of design.
