Designing to me is a way to enhance qualities of inter-relating, by respecting ‘in-betweens’ (Ma) that can accommodate subtle to significant difference. I have learnt about this designing from Japan. I bring this practice to research, teaching and moments of gathering, where I have collaborated with various groups of people across Australia and Asia, to address various entrenched issues and self-determine shared futures. These range from enabling adaptive capacities for regional communities prepare for natural disasters; supporting Indigenous sovereignty and nation building; supporting transcultural mentorship for women in creative sectors and scaffolding guidance and structures for ethical gathering. I am also the co-founder of Service Design Melbourne network and co-leader of the Designing Social Innovation in Asia-Pacific learning platform (http://desiap.org). And no, before you ask, I was not named after the celebrated Japanese artist who is alleged to have split up The Beatles. ‘With great power comes great responsibility’, said the wise uncle of Spiderman. I spend too much time worrying about Design’s power and my responsibility in this ever-growing discipline and industry, and this has given me a lot of grey hairs in recent years… 😕
